Kerry Gates Medal

Kerry started playing netball then known as Womens Basketball at Matthews in the first year it was played at the Jolimont venue in 1960 as 16 year old and continued to play well into her 40s.

She played in the Hospital Benefits Social club team which has evolved into the current Storm Netball club and is still going strong 70 years later, in no small way due to the outstanding and inspiring work Kerry has done to keep the club thriving.

From the age of 21 she began running the club with guidance of her good friend and PNA secretary Kaye Massey. This has included coaching, playing and umpiring and to this day, nearly 60 years on, Kerry is at PNA courts from first to last match on a Saturday and every training session.

Kerry has also achieved and contributed much to our sport beyond her club.

She was awarded her national A badge for umpiring and umpired Division 1 PNA (she started when players were invited to give feedback regarding umpires post match!) and State league matches for many years.

She has her advanced coaching qualification and worked in WA Netball Development office travelling around the State conducting coach and umpire courses. She has volunteered as a selector and coach in the PNA development program having helped many young aspiring netball players along the netball pathway and compete at Association Championships.

Kerry was the team manager for State league team Perth Bullets for 13 years. She was state open, u21, u17 team manager and was selected to be team manager for Australian u21s. She worked on the organising committees of the national u17 championships, World Masters Championships and America’s Cup Festival of Sport Netball Championships when held in Perth.

Kerry has served on the committee/ board of Storm netball club, Perth Netball Association, Perth Bullets, Western Roar and WA Netball and in recognition for her contributions has received life memberships to Storm Netball club, Perth Netball Association, Perth Bullets Western Roar and Netball WA.
